Young founder wins P&G’s My Black Is Beautiful partnership and $225,000 in funding to fuel the fire
Detroit, MI – Today Healthy Roots Dolls released the new Zoé, a life-like 18” doll with hair that is uniquely designed to reinforce positive self-perceptions among young girls. The new Zoé has new realistic physical features and curly hair that matches their own. Zoé’s hair is just like real hair – girls can put hair products in it, twist it, braid it, wash it, and more. By taking care of their doll’s hair, girls learn to care for and style their own hair. More importantly, by having a doll that looks like themselves, they see how beautiful they are through Zoé’s eyes.
“Toys influence how children think, act and see themselves, so when little girls can’t find dolls that look like them, it negatively impacts their self-esteem. Zoé has already brought smiles to so many girls faces, and our new doll will bring even more joyful educational play experiences “ Yelitsa Jean-Charles.
The inspiration for Healthy Roots Dolls came from Yelitsa Jean-Charles, a young woman who – like many others – never had a doll that looked like her growing up. The one time her parents gave her a Black doll, she burst into tears because it wasn’t “the pretty one”. Since then, Yelitsa has made it her goal to make sure that no other children feel the way she did about her own appearance.
Since raising $50,000 on Kickstarter, Healthy Roots Dolls has won support from the Startup Stampede, New Voices Fund, Hillman Accelerator, Backstage Capital and Main Street Ventures. Most recently the company received $100,000 upon acceptance to the Backstage Accelerator program in Detroit and won awards totaling $125,000 at Quicken Loans Detroit Demo Day.
Furthering its mission to ignite self-love among young girls, Healthy Roots Dolls began a partnership with My Black Is Beautiful – a cultural platform powered by P&G – who recently launched an innovative line of hair care products designed to give curls and coils the ultimate care in nourishment, moisturization and styling.
This holiday season the new Zoé doll will come complete with matching, special edition My Black Is Beautiful t-shirts for Zoé and her “curl friend” and a Curl Care Kit of hair care products for joint styling sessions. The My Black Is Beautiful Golden Milk Collection Curl Care Kit includes a Hydrating Shampoo, Fortifying Conditioner, Intense Recovery Treatment and 2 Tangle Slayer Conditioning Creams (for Type 3 Hair and Type 4 Hair).
“Since 2006, My Black Is Beautiful has empowered over 3 million women to celebrate their beauty both inside and out,” said Lela Coffey, Director of Multicultural Beauty at P&G. “The partnership with Healthy Roots Dolls furthers our mission to ensure young girls and women of color are celebrated for their uniqueness and beauty, and are being supported in building a positive self-image with products designed especially for her natural hair texture”.
Beginning October 8, 2019, the new Zoe doll and My Black Is Beautiful Curl Care Kit can be purchased from www.healthyrootsdolls.com.
