A few days ago we all received the news that Gabrielle Union was let go from the hit TV show, America’s Got Talent because she called out the problematic behavior of staff and co-workers behind the scenes. Prior to leaving the station, she was told that the hairstyles she wore were “too black.” Union rightfully spoke up for herself saying that NBC was a toxic work environment and that the staff was racially insensitive.
Here are 3 reasons why we should all stand with Gabrielle Union:
There is no such thing as being “Too Black”
It’s true, as black women we have the liberty to wear our hair in many different styles. The way we decide to wear our hair should never be a topic of discussion in the workplace.
If it must be brought up, let’s talk about how amazing it looks or how we have the freedom to do whatever with it! The way we decide to wear our hair doesn’t affect our ability to get the job done. Gabrielle Union should be applauded for not only speaking up for herself, but for speaking up for every other black girl and their right to express themselves.
We need to support EVERYONE
The problems that Gabrielle Union brought in the work place are examples of discrimination that goes unaddressed in many other places.
We should all speak up, state facts, and stick by each other’s side. There is so much power in standing up for what is right. When there is more than one person who truly believes in something, others are more prone to listen and make the necessary changes. Let’s take the time to make sure our co-workers are being treated equally and if not, stand up for them at all cost.
Creating equality in the workplace
Everyone deserves to be treated with respect regardless of how they decide to wear their hair or the color of their skin. Upholding equality means rightfully acknowledging that we are not all the same and respecting those differences.
We applaud and stand with you Gabriel Union <3
